What’s really happening in your body when you feel anxious?
Anxiety isn’t something we just “think” our way into—it’s a physiological experience that begins deep in the body. For many of us, especially those carrying trauma or deep sensitivity, the world can feel overwhelming at times. And when that happens, our nervous system steps in to protect us.
In this blog, I want to gently unpack what’s happening beneath the surface when anxiety rises… and offer some tools and practices that can support you in returning to safety, softness, and presence.
The Nervous System: Our Inner Protector
Your nervous system is always scanning your environment—both inner and outer—for cues of safety or danger. It has two main branches:
- The sympathetic nervous system, which activates your “fight or flight” response.
- The parasympathetic nervous system, which allows your body to “rest and digest.”
When we feel anxious, we move into sympathetic activation. This can look like:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Shallow or held breath
- Muscle tension
- Racing thoughts or spirals
- Digestive discomfort
- A sense of urgency, or like you’re “not safe” (even if nothing obvious is wrong)
It’s your body doing its best to protect you. But when we stay in this activated state for too long, it can become exhausting—and we start to feel disconnected from ourselves, others, and the present moment.
How to Know if Your Nervous System Feels Dysregulated
You might notice:
- You feel wired, on edge, or emotionally overwhelmed
- You can’t “switch off” or relax, even when you want to
- You swing between anxiety and numbness
- You feel like your body is here, but your spirit has checked out
If any of this feels familiar, know this: it’s not that something is wrong with you. Your nervous system just needs a little support to feel safe again.
Nervous System Regulation: Coming Home to the Body
Here are a few gentle ways I love to support my own nervous system—and those of my clients—when things feel a bit too much.
🌿 Somatic Grounding
Coming back into your body helps remind your nervous system that you’re here now, and that you’re safe. You might:
- Gently shake out your arms, legs, or hips
- Place your hands on your heart or belly
- Press your feet firmly into the ground and feel the support beneath you
These small movements can bring a powerful shift in just a few minutes.
💨 Breath as Medicine
The breath is one of the most immediate and accessible ways to soothe the nervous system. Try this simple rhythm:
- Inhale for a count of 4
- Exhale slowly for a count of 6–8
- Repeat for a few minutes, and notice how your body begins to soften
No need to force. Just invite ease.
This tells your brain: “It’s safe to relax.”
🤲🏽 Co-Regulation
We don’t always regulate alone. Sometimes it’s the presence of someone safe—a friend, a therapist, a partner, even a pet—that helps our system settle. Let yourself receive that support when it’s available.
🍫 Ritual, Cacao & Sensory Anchors
Sacred ritual—like drinking ceremonial cacao, lighting a candle, or tuning into the scent of an oil—can gently guide us back to our bodies. These practices speak directly to the senses and help create a felt sense of safety.
🌀 Meet Yourself with Compassion
Your body has its own language. Instead of trying to fix or silence it, try asking:
“What do you need right now?”
“Where do you feel safe?”
“Can I stay with you, just as you are?”
This creates space for healing to unfold naturally, without pressure.
In Closing…
Anxiety is not a personal failing. It’s a message. A signal from your body that something needs attention, care, and safety.
When we start listening—gently, slowly—we begin to shift from survival into presence. And from there, healing becomes possible.
