Quick answer: Most holistic work helps you feel calmer for a while. But calm on its own fades, and you land back where you started. Lasting change needs three things together: a clear map of what’s actually running you, the release of what that surfaces, and a body trained to hold the change under pressure. Grounding is part of it. Direction is what makes it stick. That’s the thinking behind the work I do in Big Bay, Cape Town.
If you’ve ever left a massage, a meditation or a healing session feeling wonderful, and then found yourself flat and stuck again a week later, this one’s for you. The work did help. Calm was just never the whole answer.
Why “just relax” never quite works
When you’re burnt out, “just relax” is possibly the least helpful advice on earth. A nervous system stuck in survival mode can’t be talked into calming down, and a bubble bath won’t reach it. So you chase the next calming thing, feel better for an afternoon, and slide back. It’s exhausting, and it can quietly convince you that you’re the problem. You’re not. The approach is just missing a layer.
The piece most healing skips: direction
Here’s what almost nobody offers: a clear read of the patterns actually running the show. The ones underneath the tiredness, the tight shoulders, the 3pm crash. Most practitioners have release without a map, or biohacking without any of the emotional and energetic work. You get to feel better, but you never quite find out why you keep ending up here, or where you’re actually trying to go. That “why” and that “where” are what I mean by direction. And direction is the difference between a nice afternoon and a life that changes.
Feeling better vs. actually changing
Feeling better is a moment. Changing is a direction you keep moving in. A single session can give you real relief, and that matters, especially when you’re depleted. But if nothing maps what’s driving the pattern, and nothing trains your body to hold the new state when life gets loud again, the relief has nothing to anchor to. This is why so many people collect modalities for years and still feel stuck: they’ve had a lot of “clearing” and very little direction.
What healing looks like when it actually holds
In my experience, change that lasts moves through three stages, in order. First you map it. You get an honest picture of who you are, what patterns run you, and where you’re headed. Then you clear what the map surfaces. The stored stress and stuck patterns, released through gentle body-led work like BodyTalk and Reiki. Then you embody the change, so the new state survives a hard week and stops being something you have to hold in place. Map, clear, embody, together rather than in isolation. That combination is rare, and it’s exactly why it works.
A real example
One client had done everything. Years of massage, meditation, the occasional energy session. Each one helped for a few days. What finally shifted things wasn’t another clearing; it was the map. Once she could see the pattern she kept looping, the one that had her over-giving until she collapsed, the bodywork finally had somewhere to land. Six weeks later she wasn’t just calmer. She was moving differently, and choosing differently.
Where this is going
This is the thinking behind a signature approach I’ve been quietly building. It’s a way of working that starts with direction, not just relief. I’m not going to rush it. I’d rather share it when it’s genuinely ready than hurry it out to meet a date. It will be a small, in-person experience here in Cape Town. If any of this landed, the best thing you can do is follow along and get on the list, so you hear first. In the meantime, if you’d like to start with the release work, my BodyTalk and Reiki sessions are a gentle place to begin. WhatsApp +27 76 612 9266.
Frequently asked questions
Isn’t feeling grounded the point of holistic work?
Grounding matters. It’s a real part of it. But grounding on its own tends to fade, because it soothes how you feel today without touching what keeps recreating the pattern. The lasting change comes when grounding is paired with direction: knowing what’s running you and where you’re headed.
What do you actually mean by “direction”?
A clear read of your patterns and where you’re trying to go. It’s the layer most sessions never get to, and it’s the difference between releasing tension over and over, and understanding why the tension keeps coming back so you can move somewhere new.
Do I need to know what’s wrong before I book?
No. You don’t need to arrive with the answers, because mapping the pattern is part of the work. You just need to be curious and willing to be honest about how you’ve been feeling.
